The Last Roman Campaign Pack DLC was developed by The Creative Assembly, published by SEGA and released on 25 June 2015.
The Last Roman Campaign Pack added a huge new Campaign pack to Total War: ATTILA, and introduced a new 'Expedition' gameplay feature, 5 playable factions with additional units, buildings and technologies and a dramatic story-based campaign.
The Last Roman's Campaign map is a vast and highly-detailed representation of central Western Europe in 533 AD, featuring 35 provinces across over 100 regions, including Italy, North Africa, Spain and France.
The Last Roman offers five playable factions - the brand new Roman Expedition but also the Ostrogoths, Vandals, Franks and the Visigoths - each one featuring its own faction traits and new campaign starting-position.
The Vandalic Kingdom is threatened by rebellious Sardinia and the looming Roman danger, while the Ostrogothic Kingdom is hamstrung by its pro-Roman queen and the demands of an unworkable alliance. Both seek to solidify their borders and make the most of Italy's rich and fertile lands; but Belisarius' reputation precedes him, and they know a cornered animal will fight to the last.
For the Franks and the Visigoths, the return of the Romans presents an opportunity. Both are growing kingdoms, fuelled by youthful vigour and a thirst for conquest. Now, the time is right for them to expand; with the other great powers locked in conflict for control of distant Africa, Europe lies waiting - waiting for a new, greater empire to rise from Rome's ashes!
The 'Expedition' mechanic was a unique feature of this project. In most Total War Games, the player starts the campaign owning specific regions and technologies and units etc. which we call 'the start position'. However, the 'Expedition' mechanic allowed players to essentially calve out their own 'start position'. When playing as the general Belisarius with his Roman Expedition, the player starts with a small band of units, which can fight battles and capture regions. The player could chose to keep the regions for themselves, or give them to the Roman Expeditions parent faction, the Roman Empire. The player could chose to work with their parent faction, or at any point split off as their own faction (Western Roman Empire) in opposition.
